HP Inc. Scientific Lab Lead in Vancouver, Washington

The Scientific Lab Lead will be the leader for a 4-6 person laboratory team. The lab team supports an R&D organization engaged in development of novel in vitro diagnostic systems. The combined organization drives development of IVD system hardware, software, and assays as well as whole-system integration and performance optimization. The successful candidate will work on assignments that are highly complex in nature where a strong degree of good judgment, initiative, and scientific and technical knowledge are required. They will work independently and alongside partners of various disciplines in a collegial, fast-paced, objectives-driven environment. In this lab-focused role, the BSL Lead Scientist will be engaged in designing and conducting experiments both routine and novel toward project objectives. As the senior scientist in the lab, this person will set the scientific standards and culture for the entire lab, and will be responsible for training and development of other scientists (exempt and/or non-exempt).

Education, skills, and knowledge we're looking for:

  • Advanced degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or similar field.

  • Expert knowledge/experience of chemical, biochemical, and/or molecular biology concepts and principles acquired through combination of education and prior work experience.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with PCR and related nucleic acid amplification techniques.

  • Scientific leadership experience in an academic or industrial laboratory environment.

  • Experience partnering across academic and professional disciplines as part of a complex organization.

  • Preference for regulated industry experience in an ISO13485-certified organization or comparable under a mature Quality Management System.

  • Fluent in routine chemical laboratory procedures, equipment, chemical nomenclature.

  • Ability to use common laboratory equipment independently in the preparation of chemical mixtures and analysis of materials.

  • Consistent skills in using a micropipette and other high precision lab tools.

  • Hands-on experience and functional understanding of analytical biochemistry instrumentation (fluorescence/absorbance/emission spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, RT-PCR thermocyclers, enzymatic assays, pH, conductivity, viscosity, particle size, contact angle, etc.) and/or routine chemical formulation procedures. Ability to operate laboratory instruments in a non- routine fashion including set up, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting.

  • Demonstrated skills in sterile technique, good laboratory practices, and adherence to biosafety protocols applied in a BSL-1 lab setting. BSL-2 lab experience a plus.

  • Use of statistical analysis and modelling software (Excel, JMP, etc.). Design of Experiments (DOE) experience to evaluate multiple influencing factors preferred.

  • Ability to develop complex experimental/analytical methods. Includes an ability to research, evaluate, recommend, and implement new analytical instrumentation, assays, or best-in-class techniques relevant to the project objectives.

  • Excellent time management skills and a drive to deliver on objectives in a dynamic and deadline-driven environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to report and present technical data to a diverse audience.

  • Ability to work independently and with a team to deliver on objectives and deadlines. Use good judgement on when to push ahead alone and when to ask for guidance/help.

  • Track record of mentoring and training others.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is $102,000 -- $157,0000 annually with additional opportunities for pay in the form of bonus and/or equity. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
